UNC-KPA to hold talks at Panmunjom

UNC PAO

Seoul, Republic of South Korea -- Representatives of the Korean People’s Army Panmunjom Mission and the United Nations Command Military Armistice Commission will hold a Colonel-level meeting in Panmunjom tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.

This meeting is a continuation of Colonel-level talks held July 23, at Panmunjom, where the KPA and UNC verbally exchanged proposals for conducting General Officer talks where the parties could discuss the formation of a group to jointly assess the circumstances and evidence pertaining to the sinking of the Republic of Korea Ship Cheonan on March 26, 2010.

The Commander UNC, Gen. Walter Sharp, is charged with the enforcement and maintenance of the Korean Armistice Agreement. The General Officer Talks forum was instituted in 1998 through mutual agreement between the UNC and the KPA as a confidence-building measure.

GO Talks are designed to lessen tensions between the combatants by providing a forum to discuss violations and reach agreement on measures to prevent future conflict between UNC and KPA military forces.
